Predator and prey, the hunter and their target. The savanna has gone but the game remains the same and crime writers the world over delight in telling the tale. Manslaughter is often a quick and messy affair, an act of passion or self-defense or a catastrophic mistake or error of judgement but murderers are usually stealthy - callous and vengeful. They watch and wait and plan ‘the perfect crime’ or ‘almost perfect crime’, let our literary detectives be the judge of how well they execute their devilish deeds.
A damsel with too much rouge, a dancer’s garb and silver sandals lying dead on the library floor of a wealthy married gentleman. A woman witnessed strangled on a train but where’s the body, no trace left of the crime, surely Mrs McGillicuddy didn’t dream it up? A child found murdered in local parkland, she never made it home from church, a grieving mother weeping for her loss. A man’s body pulled from the Thames, too late to be saved by paramedics but years on he’s back, a diamond thief in-hiding and very much alive yet the body count keeps mounting, what’s really going on?
Be it with instinct, technology or logic and an eye for microscopic flaws and inconsistencies in the details of the crimes, the detectives at the helm of these cases, Miss Maple and her hard-working young friend Lucy Eyelesbarrow, Dr Kay Scarpetta, Elizabeth Best and The Thursday Murder Club are determined to catch the villain/s and prove their mastery as sleuths.
Of course the writers will reveal the truth in time, the question is are you the reader, smart enough to avoid the red herrings and beat the case-solving masterminds to their finds?
